Things I Learned from Track Riding with the R1

YOU DO NOT RIDE A LITREBIKE LIKE A 600, OR ELSE YOU DRIFT OUT WIDE IN TURN 2 AND ONTO THE DIRT AT 90 MPH.

It's like re-wiring my head all over again; whatever skills I've developed from riding the R6 on the track within the last year has now got to go out the window. First thing I had to tackle this morning was getting over the fear of regular street tires not gripping (see below), which took about a full session. Then next session, I just tried to ride the R1 like I did the R6. Bad idea.

The R6 is what, 30, maybe 40 pounds lighter than the R1? That's not a small number at a standstill. Now imagine 30-40 pounds more compounded by velocity, then you might get the idea why the R1 could not be ridden like the R6. It's also a whole lot more work to ride the R1 given its size and mass; your arms really feel the effort just in trying to turn the bike.

I had to go back to basics - slow in, fast out. I can no longer take great satisfaction in immense corner entry speed with the R6, cause now I actually need to trailbrake on the R1, and make ground by mastering the best corner exits.

HYPERSPORT TIRES WILL GRIP, NOT TOO FAR OFF FROM RACE DOT'S

Being so used to riding the track with race DOT's, I just couldn't get over the mental hurdle of believing that hypersport tires will grip, even at A pace. Well I eventually did, and they do, but I will say that middle strip in the dual/triple compound hypersport tires are absolute crap, evident during heavy braking at A pace as the hard compound likes to "skip," unable to handle such braking input during high speeds. You get used to it, but it's still absolute junk.

WHEELIES OUT OF THE HOT PITS ARE AWESOME

It wasn't for show, it was to warm up the rear tire quickly. Really. Go ask around.

This should be interesting. I have to learn how to ride the R1 properly on the track. I have to get used to wrestling it so I can ride it smoothly. I used to only have to worry about endurance training to ride on the track, but now I also have to think about strength training, because riding a litrebike at full tilt is physically demanding.

And I have to do this when I've finally decided to do LESS trackdays.

This should be interesting.

Brainwash

I need to stop watching this damn video before I go and buy another Frenchie puppy to play with Rusty.
